Matured natural mud (from the thermal pools of Abano and Montegrotto) holds clay and thermal water, containing bromine and iodine, to which the mud owes its anti-inflammatory effect. This mud, or ‘‘fango’’ in Italian, is a rare natural resource of our world. The effect of thermal water is like an anti-inflammatory medication, the difference being that thermal water has no side effects. A European patent classifies fango as a natural medicine, thus proving its healing effect. During therapeutic mud treatments near Abano Terme, the mud is applied right to the skin at a temperature between 38°C and 42°C. It remains on the skin for 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the doctor's prescription. The shower, where the mud is rinsed off, is followed by a thermal water bath and then a rest. This promotes purging of toxins. It is recommended to finish the mud therapy with a full-body massage.
